Several weeks ago when I looked into setting up a cable access channel in Gooding, the conversation went to having Cable-One in Bliss. Oh , Cable-One is in both Buhl as well as in Hazzard, but says the local marketing guru in Twin at Cable-One, the ROI(Return-on-investment) is not worth stringing a wire from Hazzard 8 miles to Bliss. Many firms look at small rural American towns as well as those in Idaho.
I used to get that same attitude from Comcast in Utah, when I’d suggest that IT improvement and cable TV was important in the medium sized community of Tooele Utah. I was told , Tooele is stuck, wont grow and so on. Guess what my friends? Tooele gained not only an expanded airport, but a state of the art medical facility and before his death, Utah Jazz team owner Larry H Miller built a ultra state of the sport , motorsports complex and race track situated between Grantsville and Tooele, Utah Called MillerSports Park.
Okay lets look at Bliss. Bliss once was a going town. Bliss was the truck stop town of Idaho, as well as a railroad commerce hub. Today since I-84 has by passed Bliss there remains three eating establishments, of which my fave is the Skinny Pig, two fuel stops , granted over priced, but still go fluid when its needed, and one bar. Two motels. However the growth of Bliss remains stagnant. However I will predict that, Bliss will grow quite a bit once the city finally completes the build of a city sewer system and graduates from strictly septic tanks. Both the EPA, and Idaho’s Department of EQ, has told Bliss city officials not to grant many more new construction building permits until the sewer system is in place as the under ground water table could be effected by further septic tank installations. Added to that many more problems face Bliss in growth. But growth will come. One reason is that The Knytes-of-Anarchy has adopted the tiny town, looking at development of two derelict facilities. An old RV park service station currently seen as Bob’s Rock Shop and an old service station that was occupied by Canyonside Auto Repair. I remember the place as the Y-Inn Texaco. However that is getting off base a bit. I also remember well, when placing a long distance call from Hazzard meant telling an operator your home number so it cold be billed for the call. At the time there was no central switching system. This was when Qwest was called Mountain Bell. What changed that? The Knytes-of-Anarchy, then known as the Hazzard County Knytes Kustmz Association. We pushed and pushed, but few at Ma-Bell listened, that was until threats were made by the Hazzard Knytes of building and operating our own telecom satellite based cable style TV company. Which was labled as HazzComm. The reason to be honest that the TV translators bringing in the TV signals from Boise to the area, was to be a part of the HazzComm project. In time , A.T.&.T bought HazzComm, then sold it to Cable One. Those royalties by the highway goes to the operational finances of the Knytes-of-Anarchy today. Now that Bliss is just on the cliff, really, and near to jump into the 21st Century, The Knytes –of- Anarchy are looking at rejuvenating , HazzComm and building an alternative Telecomm for Bliss, including a in town cable system, and a microwave cable system, building on what used to be Teton Wireless. Something else the Hazzard Knytes proved out to being viable.
No ROI is not as important as ROC(Respect-of-Community.) Bigger companies need to get out of their cubicles, in Colorado and Phoenix as in the case of Cable-One, look at the potential upcoming hot spots. But then few have the visions as we who were and are, Hazzard County Knytes/Knytes-of-Anarchy.
We will be at the Bliss city council meeting on March 17th to look into levering the city media franchise tax. to enable HazzComm to become again.
